BHYC Sailing School: Adult Sailing Instruction
All BHYC Sailing School classes are predominantly taught in the boats and on the water to maximize practical knowledge and skill building, supplemented by individual reading from the provided textbook. From introductory to advanced sailing classes, all courses are designed for the adult sailor based on years of experience.
Our instructors are US Sailing certified, and the the BHYC Sailing School is one of only two locations in the state of Maine that is a US Sailing accredited program.
Membership in BHYC is not required to join any class -- our classes are open to all who are interested.
All Adult Learn to Sail programs at BHYC are taught on our J/22 sailboats (although private lessons can be arranged on your own sailboat).
About the J/22
Since its introduction in 1983, the J/22 has blossomed into an International class now with 1,550+ boats sailing in 65 fleets in 18 countries. BHYC has two club J/22s, and several members own and race these fun sailboats.
BHYC Sailing School Programs
BHYC offers four adult programs to meet your needs:
Sailing in Boothbay Harbor
For any of our adult programs, please:
- Dress in layers appropriate to the weather. Bring rain gear if appropriate - we spend as much time on the water as we can.
- Bring Sunglasses / Hat / Sunscreen / Water
- Wear closed-toe non-marking shoes. No flip-flops, please.
- Bring your USCG approved life jacket. If you own one that you prefer, please bring it. BHYC will provide a life jacket upon request.
Courses will be conducted regardless of weather conditions. If weather conditions require it, courses will be held onshore, but we strive to be on the water when safe and practicable.
