The Boothbay Region Sailing Club (BRSC) serves all high school and middle school students from the Boothbay, Damariscotta, and Wiscasset regions, including public, private, and home-schooled.  All students who meet their school’s eligibility requirements are invited to participate, and all experience levels are welcome, from the new racer to the elite.

High School Sailing is the only recognized co-ed high school sport.  BRSC hosts two registered New England Scholastic Sailing Association (NESSA) teams, Boothbay Region High School and Lincoln Academy, as well as a conglomerate team composed of middle and high school sailors from all schools.  We compete in the Pen-Bay League and NESSA on the weekends, and will travel to enhance our skills. Most events are at SailMaine in Portland, Rockland Community Sailing, Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, MDI Community Sailing in Southwest Harbor, and our home - Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club.

Our four-day program in Spring and Fall makes us one of the longer sailing and more competitive programs. We race primarily in C420s, and provide opportunities to sail in tech dinghies and J/22s, as well. We are one of the few teams that will race both JV and Varsity team on the same weekend to give our sailors every opportunity to improve in competition.  The Fall season begins around Labor Day and stretches into November. The Spring season starts in late March and runs through early May.

The program meets from 3:30 - 6:15 Monday - Thursday (after school) at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club** (136 Western Avenue, PO Box 497, West Boothbay Harbor) and races on weekends at various locations.  All boats are provided by the yacht club.  In addition, during cold weather the BRSC has dry suits available at no extra charge for sailors who do not currently own one.

We do not want cost to be a barrier to participation; fees may be waived, up to the full program fee. Please submit a waiver application by the Thursday falling within the first week of practice.
Spring and Fall Opti Sailing

Spring Opti Sailing

Spring Opti Sailing is open to sailors of an intermediate and higher level and typically runs twice a week starting in early May and running through the beginning of June. With typically heavier winds and cooler air and water temperatures all Spring Opti Sailors must be comfortable skippering a boat by themselves, tacking, gybing, reaching and at least beginning to sail upwind, and priority will be given to returning sailors. If you are unsure if your sailor is a good fit, you can reach out to program director Chris Liberti for more information. We will continue to combine recreational and racing sailing in our spring opti program, but we will favor racing skills more heavily then the fall. Like the fall we will work with each individual sailor to improve their skills and confidence in a collaborative and fun environment.

Fall Opti Sailing

In addition to the HS racing team, the BRSC offers Opti Sailing for all levels in an abbreviated Fall season, typically starting in early September and running through early to mid October. The Opti is generally the right choice for sailors from age 9 - 12 and under 110 lbs. who are comfortable enough in and around the water to learn to sail an Opti singlehanded. If you are unsure if your sailor is a good fit, you can reach out to program director Chris Liberti for more information. Our fall program will cater to the skill of the sailors and work to help each sailor improve in a collaborative and fun environment, the program will always combine racing and recreational sailing, with the ratio determined by the skills and interests of each particular group.

The BRSC is hosted by the Boothbay Region Yacht Club as a service to the community.  Membership in the yacht club is not required and has no effect on sailor participation or cost.
