Join us for Sailing and Tennis this Summer

The Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Junior Program provides a summer of outdoor fun with Sailing and Tennis programs available.  Membership is not required for participation in the Junior Program, although members do get discounted fees.  Summer Camp Scholarships are available with the support of the BHYC Junior Program Foundation.

Weekly sessions, Monday through Friday, include special events throughout the summer.  Sailing and Tennis schedules are arranged so that sailing and tennis may be pursued separately, or in combination, for a unique summer camp experience.

Be sure not to miss the numerous family social events held throughout the summer in conjunction with our Junior Program.  All kids participating in any session of the Junior Program and their families are welcome to join us at the cl
ub for any of the socials and events.

Running from June through August, the BHYC Junior Program is among the longest sailing programs in northern New England. We teach kids at all levels of experience to be comfortable and safe on the water. Rowing, sailing, racing, sportsmanship, and marlinspike seamanship skills are taught. For the advanced juniors, ages 14 and up we accept 2-3 people each year to be apprentice instructors with an eye towards obtaining US Sailing Instructor Certification when they turn 16 or 17.

Special events throughout the summer liven up class time. Model Boat Day, Adventure Sails, Family Nights, and trips to the inner harbor for ice cream are all part of the fun. Regattas, whether hosted at home or away, help our young sailors learn about themselves and racing as a team.

Participants in the Junior Sailing Program are grouped by age, skill and desire. The Sailing Director may move sailors to their appropriate level to enhance learning.

Morning programs are from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM; afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. New for 2023 Morning sailors can be dropped of for supervision starting at 8am.

At BHYC we will teach your youngster to sail right. All BHYC Instructors have US Sailing Level 1 or above Certification, Safesport, Concussion, First Aid and CPR training. These are basic certifications every instructor should have - and all of ours do.

  • Summer Tennis
    • Join us on the courts with weekly Monday through Friday sessions and special Junior Program events throughout the summer. The schedules are arranged so that tennis and sailing may be pursued separately or in combination.

The Junior Program tennis staff consists of a USTA certified pro and two or more instructors and teaching apprentices. The emphasis is on learning sportsmanship and tennis skills in a fun environment.

The Junior Program includes numerous intra-club matches, as well as interclub competitions with area teams for the advanced players, scheduled throughout the summer. Friday is tournament day for children at all levels who wish to participate.

In the event of inclement weather, tennis classes may be held at the Boothbay Region YMCA at the regularly scheduled time. On rainy days, please call the BHYC tennis office (207-633-5750) to confirm class location.

Each participant in the tennis program must wear tennis shoes and have a tennis racquet.

Announcing the Return of the Battle of the Bay! This year BHYC is hosting a slightly different kind of Junior regatta this summer. While there will still be the classic staples (course racing, food, friends and t-shirts), we are expanding what a Junior Regatta looks like. All centerboard dinghies under 20 feet are invited. Classes that have six or more boats will be given a class start and trophies. Classes with fewer than six will be given the option to race in a mixed fleet or receive a refund for this year while they work to get more folks out in their class next year. We know we will have the Optis and 420s, of course, are hopeful the Lasers and Teras will show up, and we hope to see some more unusual classes too. We're also working on a schedule that mixes racing with social events on and off the water. Hope to see you in the Bay in August!
