Junior Program Sailing
From June through August, our nine week program is the longest in northern New England. We teach kids at all levels of experience to be comfortable and safe on the water. Rowing, sailing, racing, sportsmanship, and marlinspike seamanship skills are taught. For the advanced junior 14 and up we accept 2-3 people each year to be apprentice instructors with an eye towards obtaining US Sailing Instructor Certification when they turn 16 or 17.
Special events throughout the summer liven up class time. Pirate Day, Model Boat Day, Adventure Sails, and trips to the inner harbor for ice cream are all part of the fun. Regattas, whether hosted at home like the Maine State Championships in the Opti and C420 classes, or away regattas like the Harraseeket Youth Regatta and Junior Olympics help our young sailors learn about themselves and racing as a team.
Registering for multiple weeks brings savings, and members of BHYC enjoy an additional discount on Junior Program sailing and tennis programs. See the program brochure for program discounts.
Make a day of it by playing tennis and staying for lunch. New this year, we introduce the Wings Program - supervised fun from 9:00-10:30 before tennis for our teens, or 2:30-4:00 for our younger participants. Parents save a trip to BHYC for kids on different schedules, and kids enjoy time with their friends.
Want to explore? New in 2019 BHYC is offering two-week programs: Keelboat semi-private lessons (limit 4 students per session), Model Boat Sailing & Science and Remote Operated Vehicle Sailing & Science.
Participants in the Junior Sailing Program are grouped by age and experience. The Sailing Director may move sailors to their appropriate level to enhance learning.
Each participant in the sailing program will bring their own life jacket and whistle. Close-toed shoes that can get wet (old sneakers are fine). Sunscreen, a towel, reusable water bottle, sunglasses and or a hat, and a light jacket are all part of the sailors 'kit' that should be brought every day to class to adapt to changing weather conditions.
Life jackets are worn at all times on the docks and on the water - no exceptions.
Morning programs are from 9:00 - 12:00; afternoon sessions from 1:00 - 4:00. Join us for lunch from 12:00 - 1:00. Bring your own or eat with us for $30/week.
At BHYC we will teach your youngster to sail right. All BHYC Instructors have US Sailing Level 1 or above Certification, Safesport, Concussion, First Aid and CPR training. These are basic certifications every instructor should have -and all of ours do.
